Kernpunkte

You could trigger small avalanches today on a variety of wind-loaded features. Use caution where fresh drifts crack around you near ridgelines and in mid-slope gullies.

Shifting winds have been strong enough to transport older snow onto new slopes in the northern half of the forecast area. A few inches of new snow fell overnight south of Mammoth, where winds are supposed to be just as strong. Where fresh drifts formed on top of hard crusts, they may be sensitive to your weight. These will be most common on the leeward sides of ridgelines, and near cross-loaded mid-slope gullies.

Watch for shooting cracks in dense or textured surface snow. Steep, complex, and exposed terrain can increase the consequences of getting knocked off your feet by a small avalanche

Avalanche Discussion

Winds have increased significantly over the past 12 hours. Gusts have been blowing from various directions. They are forecast to continue and become more consistently northeast today and tonight.

From Mammoth north, several inches of soft snow fell on the night of the 3rd. Southwest winds stiffened the snow surface on northerly slopes, but loose storm snow was preserved underneath. Today's strong northeast winds are certainly enough to peel back the wind skin and start moving that loose snow onto southerly aspects. Though less snow fell on the southern parts of the forecast area with the last storm, Rock Creek and Bishop Creek received 2 to 4 inches of new snow last night. So, there will be fresh snow to blow around.

Strong and shifting winds can deposit slabs in unusual ways. A lack of wind data across the region is a significant source of uncertainty in this forecast. When faced with uncertainty, make careful assessments or default to lower slope angles and sheltered terrain. Cold wind and blowing snow could make for unpleasant travel conditions. Cover exposed skin and hold on to your hat!
