Kernpunkte

New snow that fell yesterday was followed by Northwest winds that have likely blown the snow into slabs on leeward sides of ridgelines.  Look for signs of windloading such as pillowy rounded features or rippled snow surface, and avoid these areas especially where a small avalanche could carry you over consequential terain.   At lower elevations, mostly stable snowpack condtions are expected, but as always look for red flags of instability such as recent avalanches, cracks in the snowpack or whumphing to alert you to localized instabilities.

    A couple inches of new snow combined with moderate to strong  NW winds yesterday have created shallow wind slabs along leeward ridgelines.  Expect these wind slabs to be sitting on top of a firm surface, and could be triggered by the weight of a rider.  Avoid areas where you notice signs of wind loading such as rounded pillowy snow drifts, hollow sounding snow, or snow with a rippled snow texture.  While these windslabs may be small and shallow today, triggering a windslab above consequential terrain traps or a long steep slope could have an undesirable outcome.  

Avalanche Discussion

A strong snowpack has been observed in the Northern Wallowas in the past week.  Before yesterdays storm, the snow surface was varied, but in many places consisted of a temperature crust from warm temperatures earlier in the week.  The 1/6 crust layer could be found to be quite thin and is now buried 6-8 inches below the surface in most locations.  While we are not seeing any significant test results on this layer, we will continue to keep an eye on it.
