Rapid warming and intense spring sunshine will encourage wet loose avalanche activity today, especially on solar slopes and near rock features. Time your day so that you don't find yourself on or beneath steep slopes once the snow is too wet.

    Many D1-1.5 wet loose avalanches occurred yesterday throughout our region. Temperatures will be even warmer today, and warmer earlier in the day. Wet snow, roller balls, and deep boot penetration are all signs that wet loose avalanches are becoming more likely. Snow slipping out from under your skis is another good indicator that instability is increasing. Be mindful of terrain features that promote warming, such as solar slopes and cliff bands. You may experience stable conditions beneath your feet while the terrain above or below you is already too warm. Even a small wet loose avalanche in extreme terrain can have big consequences. The best way to navigate wet loose instabilities is to be off of steep slopes, and away from overhead hazards, earlier in the day before the snow gets too wet.

    D1 wet loose avalanche that occurred between 11:30 and 2:30 pm, 03/19. 

Avalanche Discussion

Numerous wet loose avalanches occurred yesterday up to ~ 11,000', on all aspects. We are seeing the most activity on slopes that held soft snow at the surface before this most recent warming event, and in areas with radiators that absorb heat, such as cliff bands. A D2 avalanche was reported on a SE planar slope between 10,000' and 11,000' in the McGee Creek area. 

The fact that the warmup has been gradual, along with afternoon clouds and winds, has helped to keep us from having a massive "spring shed" at this time. You can expect to see continued widespread activity of smaller wet loose avalanches. Larger, D2 avalanches will be more isolated in nature, but are not impossible. While we saw clear skies last night, temperatures suggested a poor refreeze, especially below 9500'. Temperatures are rising faster today, and are already above freezing in some places. Planning to be off of steep slopes and out from overhead hazards by midday is never a bad idea when dealing with this avalanche problem.
