Kernpunkte

It will still be possible to trigger a large Wet Slab avalanche on Tuesday.  These avalanches are most likely on North, East and South slopes between 7,200 and 9,400 ft.  Below treeline Wet Loose avalanches aren't entirely out of the question, but rocks and logs beneath the snow will be the greatest hazard.

    The snow is so shallow below treeline that Wet Slab avalanches are less likely than they were on Sunday.  At higher elevations there is more snow because the precipitation didn't transition to rain until later in the storm.  This also means that the snowpack was a bit less drenched and weak layers could remain more intact.  Rain and warm temperatures will continue overnight before a gradual cooling trend begins.  It's likely that most of the wet avalanche activity is behind us, but with weak faceted snow at the base of our snowpack and lots of water throughout the snowpack, I would be cautious on any large, steep slopes until the temperature drops below freezing.

    With continued temperatures above freezing and periods of rain, Wet Loose avalanches will remain possible.  Wet Loose avalanches occurr when the surface snow is melting and looses cohesion.  They are smaller than slab avalanches but can be more forceful than anticipated because of the heavy wet snow.

Avalanche Discussion

The continued rain and warm temperatures have put a hurt on our snowpack.  Today I found 53 cm. of snow at 6,500 where I measured 75 cm. yesterday.  There appears to be more snow above 7,200 ft. where the transition to rain came later on Saturday night.  In both locations I was easily able to locate the weak faceted snow and crusts that underlay last weeks storm snow.  Likely the most dangerous period occurred on Sunday when it was raining very hard.  With more warm temperatures, a layer of facets, and lots of variability by elevation, we won't be ready to close the book on Wet avalanche problems until we get some temperatures below freezing.
