Kernpunkte

Generally stable conditions exist. While your odds are low, it's not impossible to trigger a slab avalanche in steep, upper elevation terrain that faces away from the sun. Steer clear of steep slopes if the surface crust melts and you're sinking deep into a wet, mushy snowpack.

Triggering a persistent slab avalanche remains a possibility on wind-loaded slopes above about 9,200 feet that face NW-N-NE-E. These areas harbor weak layers (sugary facets, surface hoar, and crust + facet combinations) that remained dry during the recent hot weather.

Steep, rocky, wind-affected slopes with variable snowpack depths are the most suspect. Look for smooth snow pillows and dunes as indicators that the wind has been at work. You may not see obvious signs of instability, such as snowpack cracking and collapsing, before triggering a slide.

(3/17/2026) A pair of large natural slab avalanches that failed on weak sugary facets buried 2 feet below the surface. N aspect @ 8300'. These probably occurred over the March 14/15 weekend.

You may be able to trigger small Wet Loose avalanches if surface crusts break down this afternoon. These are most likely during the heat of the day on very steep slopes that face the sun. Although slow-moving, these avalanches are surprisingly powerful and difficult to escape.

Starting and ending your day early is a great way to reduce your risk. If crusts become unsupportable, you've missed your window. Move to a shadier aspect or consider calling it a day.

(3/26/2026) Wet slab and wet loose avalanches. E-SE @ 9,300-9,800'. Prairie Ck.
