Yesterday, the Wyoming Department of Transportation fired their GazExs on Teton Pass. They triggered a very large slide on Glory Bowl that deposited 10s of feet of snow onto the road. Two skiers triggered a near full depth avalanche on a mid-mountain, mogulled slope on Snow King. Skiers and riders are likely to trigger similar slides today, and natural activity will be possible. Cautious route finding and careful snowpack evaluation will be essential for safe travel in avalanche terrain.

    In the last week, the Tetons have received up to 10 inches of snow water equivalent. Very strong southwesterly to westerly ridgetop winds have accompanied this snowfall. This scenario has formed dense wind slabs at the mid and upper elevations. These slides could fail on density breaks within the recent snowfall, and possibly down to layers of faceted snow from January. Slab depths could reach four feet if failure occurs on deeper layers. If afternoon sun occurs, the likelihood of these slides will increase.

    While the surface of the snowpack froze overnight, the upper portion is still saturated, warm and wet. At the mid and lower elevations, skiers and riders could trigger wet slabs involving the majority of the snowpack. If mostly clear skies prevail in the afternoon, the likelihood of triggering these slides will increase and natural activity will become possible.

Avalanche Discussion

Expect mostly clear skies on Sunday as high pressure builds into the region. Overnight lows in the mountains will be in the single digits before rising into the mid 20s during the day. Inverted temperatures will develop tonight, and the valleys will be around five degrees cooler. Northwesterly ridgetop winds will decrease to 5 to 15 miles per hour by Sunday morning.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be Considerable on Sunday. Skiers and riders venturing into steep avalanche terrain could trigger wind slabs on a variety of aspects above 7,500 feet. These slides could fail on density breaks within the recent snowfall or down to a graupel layer from last Friday. This scenario results in slab depths ranging anywhere from six inches to four or five feet. As the day warms, these slides could become more susceptible to failure on sunlit aspects. In the Togwotee Pass area, a chance lingers to trigger full depth avalanches on northerly aspects above 9,000 feet. With cold temperatures expected overnight, the threat of wet slides will be greatly diminished Sunday morning.
