Kernpunkte

A quick hitting storm passed through the area yesterday, bringing 3–7 inches of dry snow above 6,000 feet. Reactive cornices and wind slabs were observed along easterly facing slopes near and above treeline. More of this type of action is possible today. Overall, low avalanche danger will prevail, but be cautious as you ascend into windy locales. Remember that wind blowing snow is a red flag of avalanche danger.

    Mount Shasta is no stranger to wind, and today’s northerly flow near and above treeline will likely move snow around—a red flag of avalanche danger. Even under blue skies, wind slab hazards can persist.

    Wind slabs, cornices, and small wind lips were observed near treeline yesterday, all reactive to triggering and easily entraining fresh, dry snow on slopes below. No large avalanches were seen, but small test slopes serve as key indicators of potential hazards in steeper, more consequential terrain.  

    Watch for wind blowing snow and take note of where it's headed. Look for cracking or collapsing in drifted snow. These are clear warning signs of the problem. When in doubt, stick to windward slopes or sheltered terrain.

    Cornices and wind lips like this were touchy yesterday near treeline, 2.19.25. More of this today is possible.

Wind associated avalanche hazard remains possible today. Loose, dry snow is available for wind transport. Avalanche danger isn’t limited to snowfall—northerly wind may rapidly load leeward terrain. Watch for blowing snow and where it's accumulating.Snow on the ground:  Mount Shasta, near treeline - 146" / Castle Lake - 109"  / Mount Eddy (Wagon Bowl) - 102" / Medicine Lake - 92"
