Kernpunkte

Expect natural and human-triggered wet avalanches to occur as sunshine warms slopes today. Wet loose avalanches are likely to entrain enough snow to easily carry a person in steep terrain and even bury someone in a terrain trap. Shady slopes above 9,000' will be less dangerous; look for lingering wind slabs there, especially in crossloaded couloirs and beneath cliffs.

    The potential for large wet snow avalanches will increase as temperatures warm throughout the day. The potential size of avalanches will grow larger through the day as sun heats the 12+ inches of snow that fell over the weekend.   Minor wet loose avalanches occurred Sunday night and Monday as temperatures warmed  but was limited to areas around trees and rocks. The snow that remains is the concern today. Beware of slopes above or behind you that are cooking in the sun, especially in sunny bowls and beneath cornices.

    This area in the N Fork of Murphy Creek showed obvious signs of a growing wet loose problem despite overcast skies. Warmer temperatures today will wet snow deeper into the snowpack and create further potential for larger wet loose avalanches.

    You may find wind slabs that formed over the weekend to be reactive today on high, shady slopes. String winds formed these slabs in lee terrain features, beneath cliffs and tucked in low on slopes. Look for wind whales, pillows and other signs of drifting. These slabs still showed some signs of propagation potential yesterday though weren't reactive in a widespread way.

    Wind slabs low on the ridgeline point to the high winds last weekend. These may remain reactive today.

Avalanche Discussion

Reminder that closed ski areas are reverting to wild snow conditions and natural avalanches large enough to bury a person can occur there.  Warmth and sunshine can cause avalanche problems, even on previously groomed and heavily compacted slopes. Read the forecast but remember that the snowpack will be different at closed ski areas.
