Kernpunkte

Triggering a slab avalanche in wind drifted snow will be possible on Saturday on lee terrain features near and above treeline on west, north and east facing slopes. Identify terrain features that have been wind loaded and if you observe signs of unstable snow such as cracking or previous avalanches, be cautious in steep terrain and evaluate features below that could increase the consequence of triggering an avalanche.

New snow overnight and into Saturday is expected to total in around 3-6". New snow combined with moderate to strong winds out of the south will create new wind slabs on lee slopes. Wind can pile up snow many times deeper than what has accumulated on the ground. Triggering a wind slab avalanche on Saturday will not likely be large enough to bury a person, however be cautious on steep slopes or where terrain traps below can lead to a bad outcome.

Wind slabs form in specific areas where wind blown snow accumulates and are typically found below ridge tops, high points, and around features where cross slope winds deposit snow.

Identify slopes that have been loaded using visual clues and look for pillowy drifts or a wavy surface texture. If you observe cracking in recently drifted snow or if you observe previous avalanches, increase your safety margin by sticking to slopes less than 30 degrees steep.

Avalanche Discussion

The rain crusts formed by the rain event around Christmas are now almost a meter (3') below the surface. The snow above the rain crusts is showing good structure and right side up.
