Old wind slab sitting on top of near surface facets and surface hoar has made it possible to trigger a persistent slab up to 2 feet deep along ridgelines. This problem has been more reactive in areas where the slab is thicker. Look for cracking or collapsing to identify this problem.
Triggering an avalanche up to 5 feet deep remains possible on north aspects at the upper elevation. While unlikely, the consequences of an avalanche this size are potentially deadly.
Avalanches are likely to fail on facets near the ground, especially in areas where the snowpack is more shallow, like the southern and eastern Swan range.
Terrain management is the only way to avoid this problem. If you find weak snow underneath a slab, stick to slopes below 35 degrees. Avoid convex rollovers or shallow areas of the slab, as these are likely trigger points.
