Kernpunkte

A few inches of fresh snow last night will rendezvous with northerly wind today. This combo will create fresh wind slabs on smooth, hard and icy snow surfaces near and above treeline. Be leery of areas where even a small slide could take you for a ride down an icy slope.

Small to medium size wind slabs are possible today. You're most likely to run into this problem near and above treeline in leeward, southerly facing terrain. Common starting zones include along ridges and bowls or in steep, unsupported, rocky, wind loaded terrain. Look for clues like drifts and cornices. Expected size is not large, but a small slide can have consequences on smooth, hard and icy slopes.

Avalanche Discussion

High pressure dominates the weekend. Prospective climbers should not underestimate a winter climb of Mount Shasta. Climbing the mountain in the winter is a completely different beast. Everything has more bite to it. Most notable are smooth, slick, icy surfaces that make self-arrest near impossible. Extreme wind, bitter cold and short days also add spice. Be prepared, know what you're getting into, remain flexible. Be willing to turn around. We never want to discourage a grand adventure, just make sure you plan and prepare properly.
