Kernpunkte

All elevations and aspects will host low avalanche danger today. The most notable hazard is on Mount Shasta proper, where extremely variable and icy snow surfaces dominate above treeline. Self-arrest on this type of snow surface is very difficult, if not impossible. It is mandatory for climbers to carry an ice axe, crampons, helmet and know how to use them. In steep terrain...one must not fall. At this time, climbing Mount Shasta is not recommended for novices. The fangs of the beast are sharper in winter. Be prepared and know your limits.

Avalanche Discussion

Normal caution

  • Low avalanche danger resides across the land. Normal caution is advised. Wind has swept the mountain clean of most, if not all, snow available for transport. It's a winter wasteland up there. Beautiful, yes. Good skiing, no. We can't stress the slip, fall and slide for life danger enough. We're feeling some message fatigue, but the goal is for you to be fully aware. When conditions are as such, the consequences of a slip and fall have been witnessed first hand before. It's not bright, and for some, it's lights out.
  • As always, travel with a plan that provides appropriate safety margins and maintains awareness of the conditions and terrain. Continue using group travel techniques that minimize risks, like only exposing one person at a time to avalanche terrain and regrouping in safe zones out of avalanche terrain and runout zones. Ensure that all group members are carrying and properly using companion rescue equipment (transceiver, shovel and probe).
  • Soft snow lingers out there and can be found below and near treeline in shaded areas. Tree debris litters the snowpack in heavily wooded zones. Very cold temperatures and wind will move back into the area beginning next week.
  • Castle Lake road is still closed at the gate.
