Kernpunkte

On Thursday it will be possible to trigger wet snow avalanches at all elevations, especially on slopes that are in the direct sun. Remember that small avalanches can lead to long falls in sustained steep terrain. Use timing and aspect choice to minimize exposure to wet snow avalanches especially if you plan to travel in steep terrain. Natural cornice breaks will also be possible; being hit by a cornice is easy to avoid by staying out from under them.

Cornices have been falling down over the last week. Sun and warm temperatures tend to weaken cornices. Avoid being under cornices especially during the warmest times of the day.

On Wednesday I observed small (D1) skier triggered wet loose avalanches on steep south facing slopes above treeline. On Thursday, most wet loose avalanches will be small, but remember that even small avalanches can have big consequence in steep terrain. Small avalanches can knock you off your stance and push you downslope. Steep slopes that are more tilted to the sun will have the greatest chances for wet loose avalalanches, especially during the warmest times of the day.
