Shallow wind slabs may linger in gullies or below ridgelines at upper elevations in isolated areas.  Bring the proper traction equipment if you're climbing well into the alpine where firm, slick surfaces exist.  Rollerballs and even small wet loose avalanches may occur on steep sunny slopes Wednesday.

    There's not a lot of avalanche potential out there, but a few inches of snow and strong W winds formed shallow wind slabs Tuesday/Tuesday night.  Strong winds caused uneven wind distribution across the terrain.  Use caution on the lee side of gullies or steep open slopes at higher elevations. Probe for wind-stiffened snow and watch for shooting cracks as you travel. Use small test slopes to gauge the bond of the recent snow to the latest surface crusts. 

    These shallow wind slab avalanches will not be big enough to bury or injure you,  but you still need to use care around extreme terrain features or terrain traps where the consequences of a small avalanche become more serious.

    Isolated pockets of instability existed on lee aspects with wind-drifted snow Wednesday. 

    Continue to look for shooting cracks in recent wind-stiffened snow on Thursday.

Avalanche Discussion

A fast-moving front blew through Tuesday, dropping about 0.25" of water equivalent/2-3" of new snow along with strong to even extreme W winds.  The new snow layered over the most recent 3/4 crust.  

On Wednesday, NWAC forecasters and USFS climbing rangers at upper elevations in the Timberline area observed the impacts of the wind with drifts up to 6-12" on the lee side of gullies and open slopes.  Small wind slabs were reactive in isolated areas.  Up higher in the alpine, winds had scoured ridgelines and windward slopes, making crampons helpful on steeper, icier surfaces.  At middle elevations, there wasn't enough new snow to drastically improve travel conditions.  Lower elevations are even less inviting travel-wise following an extended warm stretch last week.
