Kernpunkte

Another day of warm and sunny weather will lead to wet surface instabilities. You could trigger a wet loose avalanche today, first on sunny slopes at low to mid elevations, and later in the day at higher elevations. Avoid steep and consequential slopes once the top several inches of surface snow becomes wet and mushy, and move to less consequential terrain or firmer slopes.

The likelihood for human triggered wet loose instabilities increases throughout the day, especially on slopes with trees and rocks that collect heat and transfer it to the snowpack. This includes steep features bound by rocks, cliffs, and exposed dirt. Use caution in terrain that would increase the consequence of even a small avalanche.

Avalanche Discussion

This week's record high temperatures have caused significant snowmelt and dynamic access conditions. CalTrans has begun plowing 108 and Virginia Lakes Rd, though both remain closed to wheeled vehicles. Dirt roads have a mix of dry and muddy conditions before reaching snow, and many gates are still locked. Today is the last day for motorized use in the Bridgeport Winter Recreation Area.
