Avalanche Activity

As a consequence of new snow and wind a dangerous avalanche situation will prevail. Numerous medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large dry avalanches are to be expected.

Over a wide area 40 to 60 cm of snow will fall until the early morning above approximately 1000 m. This snow is bonding poorly with the old snowpack. The moderate wind will transport the new snow. The fresh snow as well as the wind slabs can be released naturally. In particular on steep shady slopes many medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large avalanches are to be expected in particular from starting zones at higher altitudes. Powder avalanches are possible. In the typical avalanche paths they can in some cases reach as far as the valley bottom. The conditions are very dangerous for backcountry touring and other off-piste activities.

Snowpack Structure

In these regions the snowfall level will drop to approximately 500 m. Especially steep shady slopes high altitudes and the high Alpine regions: Towards its surface, the snowpack is unfavourably layered. Weak layers exist in the old snowpack here. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas as well as at high altitude snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.

Tendency

Strong northwesterly wind: On wind-loaded slopes the likelihood of avalanches is high. In addition the danger of moist and wet avalanches will increase as the day progresses.
