Snowpack Structure

Some snow fell in the last seven days. Until Monday the wind will be moderate to strong. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. The snowpack is unfavourably layered. Faceted weak layers exist in the old snowpack in particular on west, north and east facing slopes. Some medium-sized slab avalanches have been released by people in the last few days.

Tendency

The weather will be very warm. The weather conditions will foster a stabilisation of the snow drift accumulations. The danger of wet and gliding avalanches will increase.

Avalanche Activity

Slab avalanches are the main danger. Moist and wet avalanches are still possible during the day.

As a consequence of the strong northwesterly wind, fresh snow drift accumulations formed during the last few days. They can in some places be released, even by a single winter sport participant, caution is to be exercised in particular on very steep slopes at intermediate and high altitudes in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain. Weak layers in the old snowpack necessitate caution. The avalanches can be triggered in the old snow and reach quite a large size. As a consequence of warming, the likelihood of avalanches being released will increase. With the freezing level at 2600 metres, combined with the foehn wind and solar radiation, some wet and moist avalanches are still possible at medium mountain altitudes on slopes that have not yet been completely cleared in recent days. Careful route selection is advisable.
