Avalanche Activity

The conditions are sometimes critical for backcountry touring and other off-piste activities outside marked and open pistes.

The wind slabs can be released easily or naturally, especially above the tree line. The avalanches can especially at their margins be released, even by a single winter sport participant. Avalanches can also penetrate deep layers. Caution is to be exercised in particular at the base of rock walls, as well as in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain.

Snowpack Structure

The weather will be very mild. The snowpack will be generally subject to considerable local variations. The weather conditions will bring about a slow stabilisation of the snow drift accumulations. Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise to gradual moistening of the snowpack on steep sunny slopes. Towards its base, the snowpack is faceted. Whumpfing sounds and the formation of shooting cracks when stepping on the snowpack can indicate the danger.
