Snowpack Structure

Snowpack

Below approximately 2800 m, the past week’s widespread snow is lying on bare ground or, on high north-facing slopes, partly on a thin old snowpack of faceted crystals. Because this thin layer of old snow has not yet filled in the roughness of the terrain, hardly any extensive avalanches are expected. Above approximately 2800 m, the snow is lying on old snowpack that is often cohesive, especially on north-facing slopes. This sometimes contains a weak layer of faceted crystals in which isolated avalanches may be triggered.

The mild temperatures and foehn wind have moistened the snowpack in the north up to intermediate altitudes and on sunny slopes up to high altitudes.

Fresh snow overnight to Tuesday will ultimately fall with little wind, making it difficult to recognise the snowdrift accumulations of the last few days.

Weather Forecast
