Sunny and warm weather will bring good spring conditions, but could also bring on small wet loose avalanches. Wet loose avalanches will be small, but could be enough to cause skiers and riders to loose their footing in steep terrain.

    Wet loose avalanche activity will be very specific to the terrain and will mostly be associated with steep terrain in the direct sun during the warmer times of the day. As always, monitor the snow surface. As the surface becomes slushy to a depth of 6-8" or more, if you see rollerballs, if you see natural or human triggered wet loose avalanches, these are good indicators that you can trigger wet loose avalanches. These will be more of a concern in steep terrain that has some exposure to cliffs or falling hazard. 

     

Avalanche Discussion

The upper snowpack is well consolidated and we have been experiencing pretty solid refreezes overnight. On these warm days, keep monitoring how deep the soft/slushy snow is. Use timing and aspect to find the best riding conditions and be cautious on steep slopes that show signs of potential for wet loose avalanches.

No recent avalanche activity has been reported. The last few days have been colder and the constant wind helped cool the snow and to keep the snow surface firm. On Thursday, solar aspects warmed up enough by midday to provide good riding conditions, but not enough to bring on wet loose avalanches.
