For people touring in the early part of Christmas day, you will be hard pressed to find any active avalanche problems. Danger will be low throughout the morning. In the afternoon, wind slabs will begin building on lee northerly terrain near treeline and above treeline. Wind transported snow will be falling on a firm rain crust. For those touring in the high country late in the day on Christmas, small wind slab avalanches will be possible to trigger in specific areas.

    As snow starts falling later in the day, blowing snow will tend to land below ridgetops and around other features that catch drifting snow. As drifting snow builds on lee slopes, wind slab avalanches will be on the small side but could run fast on the rain crust that is present throughout the region. Look for blowing snow at ridgetops, small cornices, and pillowy or wavy surface texture as visual clues as to where wind slabs might exist. A real concern with these on Friday will be in steep terrain where triggered wind slabs could knock a person off their stance.

Avalanche Discussion

What a long strange week it has been. We wrapped up last weekend with rain into the upper reaches of the mountains leaving us with a rain crust we will be finding in the snowpack until the spring. On Tuesday, the temperature dropped and 4-5" of snow fell with moderate to strong winds. This left much of the region's surface scoured to the rain crust, while shallow wind slabs and 'packed powder' remain in select locations. Any wind slabs from the storm earlier this week, will likely be well bonded and beyond stubborn to trigger at this point.

On the Century drive side of the zone, weak old snow was found down 45-50cm on Tuesday. This was old softer snow; no persistent type weak layers were found (i.e. faceted snow). This layer, although weak, is not expected to be the source of avalanches. COAC observers will continue to monitor the snowpack.

A pro observation from Tam Rim on Thursday (not published to COAC site) revealed no faceted snow was found in the snowpack and no weak layers below the surface in that area.

Finally, incoming snow will hopefully improve skiing and riding conditions. Along with new snow and wind, we can expect to find drifted snow forming wind slabs over the crust surface. The potential exists for avalanches with the incoming storm but remember not all avalanches are created equal. At least for Friday, expect human triggered avalanches to be small.
