Wind slab
- Above 2,500 m
- Größe
- 3
Stability: poor · Frequency: some
The snowpack will be prone to triggering above approximately 1800 m. Wind slabs and weakly bonded old snow represent the main danger. Weak layers in the old snowpack necessitate defensive route selection. As a consequence of warming during the day, the likelihood of moist avalanches being released will increase on south facing slopes below approximately 2300 m.

The fresh snow of yesterday and the wind slabs must be evaluated with care and prudence in all aspects. Weak layers in the old snowpack can be released even easily by individual winter sport participants, especially on steep west, north and east facing slopes at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions. Avalanches can penetrate down to the ground and reach large size. The avalanche prone locations are prevalent barely recognisable for beginners. Whumpfing sounds and the formation of shooting cracks when stepping on the snowpack serve as an alarm indicating the danger. As a consequence of warming during the day, the likelihood of moist and wet avalanches being released will increase on south facing slopes below approximately 2300 m. Avalanches can occur in particular in starting zones where no previous releases have taken place.
Towards its base, the snowpack is faceted and weak. Avalanches can be released in deeper layers also. In addition the fresh wind slabs adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls are easily triggered. Towards its surface, the snowpack is hard and its surface has a crust that is strong in many cases.
As a consequence of warming during the day the prevalence of the avalanche prone locations will increase as the day progresses.
