Take a step back in your terrain selection- You could trigger large slab avalanches on steep, wind-affected slopes. Expect to find reactive wind slabs the higher you go, especially on the lee sides of ridgelines and mid-slope gully edges. Look for visual clues to wind transport and signs of instability such as shooting cracks.

    Winds have picked up for the first time in a number of days, and there is plenty of loose snow to transport. You could trigger wind slabs on the leeward sides of exposed features including ridges and mid-slope features. Slabs could be larger at higher elevations where more drifting has taken place. Look for signs of instability such as recent slab avalanches, shooting cracks and whumphing collapses. Steer around areas with stiffer snow, drifted snow, and wind rippled snow. Avoid steep slopes if you find signs of instability and drifted snow. 

    Stop and regroup away from slopes of concern. Terrain traps like cliffs, gullies, and trees can raise the consequences of avalanches that otherwise might not result in injury. Be sure to give cornices a wide margin- they could become fragile while they grow.

Avalanche Discussion

The winds have already begun kicking up as I write this on Wednesday afternoon, and should continue to increase into the overnight hours. Observers found freshly drifted areas on Delancey Ridge on Wednesday. Others reported isolated areas of new surface hoar growth below treeline. If you get out, submit an observation and help contribute to the forecast.

Cold temperatures and wind chills are in store for Thursday, be diligent about keeping warm and preventing cold injuries like frostbite. 

At the interface that was buried around the solstice, observers reported finding surface hoar as well as a thin sun crust on steeper S-SW slopes.  Observers have reported that these layers generally haven't been problematic. The last widespread avalanche cycle occurred on Saturday, Dec 18th (up to size D2.5) in the Washington Pass area.  A crust buried in early December can now be found roughly 4-5 feet below the surface, especially on slopes near and above 6000 ft.  We haven't seen recent avalanche activity on this crust.
