Avalanche Activity

A favourable avalanche situation will prevail

Individual avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular on extremely steep shady slopes. Apart from the danger of being buried, restraint should be exercised in particular in view of the danger of avalanches sweeping people along and giving rise to falls.

Snowpack Structure

The avalanche situation is favourable. In many places, faceted soft layers exist in the snowpack in the vicinity of the rain crust that formed at the end of December. However, these are now prone to triggering only in isolated cases. Otherwise the bonding of the snowpack is mostly favourable in the Jura, on the northern flank of the Alps and in western Lower Valais. From central Valais through northern Ticino to Grisons, in many cases the entire snowpack is faceted and interspersed with thin melt-freeze crusts. In very isolated cases, avalanches can be released in the old snow near the ground on very steep shady slopes. In the far south, an unbroken thin blanket of snow exists only on north facing slopes.

Tendency

Thursday: After a clear night it will be sunny again during the day. The avalanche danger will not change significantly. Friday: On Thursday night cloud will build up from the north. During the day it will be quite sunny in Valais and in the south. A little snow will fall on the northern flank of the Alps and in Grisons, even at low altitudes. In the south and generally at elevated altitudes, there will also be a strong to storm force northerly wind. Fresh and old snow will be transported by the strong wind. The avalanche danger will increase a little in some regions.
