Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Wet snow instabilities will exist where deeper accumulations of recent snow have formed in summit gullies and on steep slopes with a mainly North-Westerly to Easterly aspect above 900 metres. Cornices above these areas will be suspect. Cooler conditions later in the day will aid the consolidation process. At lower levels the snowpack will be soft and moist with a gradual reduction of cover. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: New snow overnight then light rain or snow through the day. The freezing level will rise well above the summits lowering by evening to around 700 metres. Daytime winds will generally be Southerly strong. Observed Weather Influences: Overnight precipitation fell as wet snow on the higher slopes, today has been very windy with South-Westerly gales and heavier falls of snow affecting slopes above 900 metres. The freezing level was just above the higher summits. ObservedSnowStability: Rain at lower levels has reduced the snow cover. New snow on slopes mainly above 900 metres has formed wet snow instabilities on steeper slopes. Greatest accumulations are in summit gullies and on Northerly to Easterly aspects, cornices above these areas are fragile. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
