Snowpack

In the north, the weekend's snowdrift accumulations are often hard and lying on a rather unfavourable, faceted old snow surface, especially on shady slopes. Some of them are still prone to triggering.

South of a line from the Rhône to the Rhine, there are still weak layers in the lower part of the snowpack. These are most pronounced on shady slopes protected from the wind in Ticino, central Grisons, the Engadine and the southern valleys of Grisons. In the last few days, only a few avalanches have been triggered deep in the old snowpack, but these were dangerously large. In the south, where it snowed at the weekend, avalanche-prone locations are a little more frequent.

Only a few gliding avalanches have been reported in the last few days. However, some of these were large.

Weather forecast to Tuesday

Conditions will be cloudy with brighter spells in Grisons. In the west and south, a little snow may fall above 1400 to 1600 m.

• Moderate to strong southwesterly wind in the west and in the Prealps, subsiding as the day progresses

Weather review for Monday

Sunday evening saw some snowfall in the south. During the day, conditions were often cloudy in the west and south with isolated showers in the west and bright spells in the south. It was quite sunny towards the east.

Fresh snow

From Sunday afternoon to Monday morning, the following amounts of new snow fell above 1500 m:

• central part of the southern flank of the Alps, Upper Engadine ridge: 5 to 10 cm
• elsewhere less or dry

At midday at 2000 m, 0 °C in the north and -2 °C in the south

Weak to moderate

• southerly overnight
• veering to southwest during the day

OutlookWednesday

In the north and inneralpine regions it will be partly cloudy with relatively long bright spells, while in the south it will be very cloudy. A little precipitation may fall in some regions, above approximately 1500 m as snow. Avalanche danger will continue to decrease, but only slowly south of a line from the Rhône to the Rhine due to the weakly bonded snowpack structure.

Thursday

In the south it will be partly sunny, elsewhere very overcast. There will be widespread precipitation in the north, most of it on the central and eastern part of the northern flank of the Alps, where around 10 to 20 cm may fall. Quantities are still uncertain, however. The snowfall level will drop from 1400 to 1000 m. High altitudes will see a moderate to strong westerly wind at times.

Avalanche danger may increase slightly in some regions with fresh snowfall.
