Considerable danger of dry and wet avalanches will be encountered in some regions.

The somewhat older wind slabs are in some cases still prone to triggering. Avalanches can reach medium size. High Alpine regions: The avalanche prone locations are to be found in all aspects. Backcountry touring and other off-piste activities call for careful route selection.

Snowpack Last week's fresh snow and wind slab layers, some of which are deep, are settling and becoming more stable. Faceted and weak layers exist in some instances near the surface of the old snowpack in the vicinity of melt-freeze crusts. In particular on shady slopes and at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack, near-surface layers remain prone to triggering in some cases. In addition, on west, north and east facing slopes, weak layers are also embedded deep in the snowpack. In particular in the inneralpine regions of both Valais and Grisons, these layers remain prone to triggering, especially in areas with shallow snow cover. Solar radiation and warming during the day made the snow surface moist up to high altitudes on Tuesday. Mostly clear skies on Tuesday night will give rise to a sometimes strong melt-freeze crust. Outlook through Friday, 21.04.2023 On Thursday there will be variable to dense cloud cover and a little precipitation will fall over a wide area. The precipitation will become heavier in the south in the afternoon and persist until midday on Friday. The snowfall level will be between 1000 m in the north and 1600 m in the south. On Friday it will remain mostly very cloudy in the south, but it will be quite sunny with convective cloud as the day progresses in the north. The precipitation forecast remains uncertain: in the period to midday on Friday, 30 to 50 cm of snow could fall above 2000 m on the main Alpine ridge from the Furka Pass into the Bernina region and to the south, and the precipitation could encroach into the adjacent regions to the north. The south to southwesterly wind will be moderate to strong at times. The danger of dry avalanches will increase a little over a wide area on Thursday as a consequence of fresh snow and strong wind. In the southern regions exposed to heavier precipitation, it will increase significantly from midday on Thursday. The danger of wet snow avalanches will decrease as the temperature falls.
