Avalanche Activity

In particular in the regions exposed to the foehn wind wind and new snow to intermediate altitudes. Caution is to be exercised adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas along the border with Switzerland.

As a consequence of new snow and a moderate to strong wind, wind slabs will form especially adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. The new snow and wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in isolated cases above approximately 2000 m. The avalanche prone locations are to be found especially in steep terrain and at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. Along the border with Switzerland the avalanche danger is one level higher. Avalanches can in isolated cases be triggered in the old snowpack and reach large size in isolated cases. This applies in particular in case of a large load.

Snowpack Structure

The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust. Individual weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on shady slopes. In particular on sunny slopes as well as at low and intermediate altitudes from a snow sport perspective, in most cases insufficient snow is lying.
