Forecast Snow Stability: There will be a period of heightened snowpack instability mainly overnight and during the morning, affecting existing areas of moderately bonded windslab. Most affected will be steep South-West through North to North-East aspects above 650 metres, Fragile cornices will be prone to collapse. There will be a slow consolidation of the wet snowpack thereafter. Exposed windward slopes will be scoured. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Rain at all elevations during daylight hours, as the freezing level remains well above the summits throughout the forecast period. The very strong South-East wind will gradually ease and veer to a strong Southerly airflow by mid afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: A dry start with summit cloud. A very windy day with South-Easterly gales throughout. The freezing level was around 650 metres by late morning. ObservedSnowStability: Significant drifting throughout the day, with snow redistribution onto lee aspects. Unstable windslab is accumulating on steep wind sheltered West to North aspects above 600 metres. South-West and North-East aspects affected due to cross loading. Fragile cornices developing above similar aspects. Exposed windward aspects are scoured. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
