Avalanche Activity

CM for 12.2. Wet snow instabilities persist above 850m on N,NE,E,SE aspects. Cornices prone to collapse. Avalanche Hazard Low.

Forecast Snow Stability: Little change is expected as the thaw continues. Wet snow instabilities will persist on steep North through East to South-East aspects above 850 metres, such as coire rims, scarp slopes, terraces and gully lines. While above 1000 metres the snow surface will become firm. At lower elevations the snowpack will continue to become depleted and will be soft, saturated and stable. Remaining cornices will be prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Low.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: No precipitation is expected during the forecast period. Winds will be mainly from the South-West, very strong overnight, before decreasing to strong during daylight hours. The freezing level will be around 2800 metres. Observed Weather Influences: Light rain showers on gale force winds from the West-South-West. The freezing level was above the highest summits for the duration of the day. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack is saturated at all elevations due to the continued thaw. Weaknesses in windslab persist on North through East to South-East aspects above 850 metres, particularly in steep locations such as coire rims, scarp slopes and terraces. Outwith these areas snow patches are limited in extent, soft and stable. Sagging cornices are prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard is Low.
