Chances of you triggering an avalanche remain likely as snowfall and wind continues through Monday.  Travel carefully, avoiding all slopes steeper than 35 degrees, and consider staying away from the runout beneath steep slopes as well.

    We've heard about numerous avalanche involvements in neighboring zones in the last 48 hours. Some avalanches are failing within the new snow layer, and some are failing on weak snow down to the Jan 24 crust. People have remotely triggered avalanches, and reports have come in that the avalanches are propagating further than expected. We've received enough snow and wind in the last few days which will continue through Monday to warrant travelling conservatively in the backcountry at this time.  Travel in areas with terrain less than 35 degrees, and also consider avoiding the slopes beneath those steep areas as well.

    Snowline is hovering around 4500ft on Monday, so expect to see small wet loose avalanches at lower elevations. They may fail naturally in steep areas, especially near trees and rocky outcroppings. If the snow is moist, the first indicators of weakness are usually rollerballs or pinwheels before an avalanche entraining more snow comes down the slope.

Avalanche Discussion

Continued periods of snowfall in the last week have made up for the lack of it in the preceding weeks.  Snow is accumulating and avalanches are coming down once again.  At lower elevations you will still find challening conditions with open creeks and variable snow surfaces including crusts coated by only a couple inches of snow.  

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
