Wind slab

The mostly small wind slabs represent the main danger.
The mostly small wind slabs represent the main danger.
Individual avalanche prone locations for dry avalanches are to be found in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas and at transitions into gullies and bowls. The fresh wind slabs are mostly small and can be released in isolated cases. This applies in particular along the border with France. In steep terrain there is a danger of falling on the icy crust.
The small quantity of fresh snow and the mostly small wind slabs are lying on top of a quite favourable old snowpack. The old snowpack is largely stable and its surface has a melt-freeze crust that is strong in many cases. The surface of the snowpack will soften during the day. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas as well as in high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.
