Moderate avalanche danger will be encountered over a wide area.

Avalanches can in some places be released in the old snowpack. In addition the somewhat older wind slabs are capable of being triggered in some cases still. Avalanches can reach medium size. Careful route selection is recommended.

Snowpack At heightened altitudes, small and easily triggered snowdrift accumulations are being generated and deposited in zones adjacent to ridgelines. In addition, the snowdrift accumulations which were generated at the beginning of the week are still prone to triggering in some places at elevated altitudes. Beneath the fresh fallen snow from last weekend, particularly in the Valais and in the Ticino, there is a layer of dust from the Sahara Desert evident in the snow cover. Inside this zone of the snowpack a weak layer has formed from which isolated avalanches were triggered during the course of this last week. On west-facing, north-facing and east-facing slopes above approximately 2200 m more than anywhere else, there are weak layers deeply embedded inside the snow cover over far-reaching areas. Nevertheless, during the last few weeks, hardly any avalanches have been reported as triggering from these weakened layers. In central and southern Grisons more than anywhere else, in northern Grisons and in the southern Valais also in some places, however, isolated avalanche triggerings are possible in these layers. Observed weather review Thursday, 06.04.2023 Following a night of clear skies, it was sunny in all regions during the daytime hours to start with. In the western regions, high-altitude clouds moved in during the course of the day. However, it remained dry. Fresh snow - Temperature At midday at 2000 m, between +1 °C in the Valais and in the southern regions and -3 °C in the northeastern regions. Wind Winds were blowing intermittently at moderate strength at heightened altitudes, otherwise at light velocity from westerly to northwesterly directions. Weather forecast through Friday, 07.04.2023 During the nocturnal hours on Thursday, precipitation will set in from the northwest. In the southern and the eastern regions, it will still remain dry. During the daytime hours on Friday, skies will be heavily overcast for the most part, precipitation is anticipated on the northern flank of the Alps more than anywhere else. The snowfall level will ascend from 800 m up to approximately 1200 m. Fresh snow The following amounts of fresh snow are anticipated above 1500 m:

• northern flank of the Alps, Lower Valais: 5 to 15 cm;
• in the remaining regions of Switzerland, only a few centimetres.

Temperature At midday at 2000 m, between -3 °C in the western regions and -1 °C in the eastern regions. Wind Winds will be blowing predominantly at light strength, at elevated altitudes intermittently at moderate strength, from westerly to northern directions. Outlook through Sunday, 09.04.2023 During the nighttime hours on Friday in the northern regions, a small amount of snowfall is expected over widespread areas. In the western and the southern regions it will be partly sunny on Saturday, on Sunday it will be sunny. In the eastern regions, skies will be quite overcast on both days. Above 1200 m, intermittent snowfall is anticipated. At high altitudes, a moderate-strength northeasterly winds will be blowing intermittently. Avalanche danger levels can increase somewhat in the northern and the eastern regions, in the other regions of Switzerland no significant change is anticipated.
