Avalanche Activity

Wet and gliding snow represent the main danger.

The Avalanche Warning Service currently has only a small amount of information that has been collected in the high Alpine regions. The weather will be very cloudy over a wide area. Up to 2600 m and above rain will fall. In all regions moist and wet avalanches are possible as a consequence of the moist air, in particular on very steep slopes, and at the base of rock walls. In the regions exposed to heavier precipitation the likelihood of avalanches being released is greater. At high altitudes and in high Alpine regions a sometimes unfavourable avalanche situation will persist in some cases. In the course of the day in some localities danger level 3 (considerable) will be reached on very steep shady slopes above approximately 3000 m. Backcountry tours should be started very early and concluded timely.

Snowpack Structure

As a consequence of mild temperatures and high relative humidity no crust will develop on the surface. As a consequence of highly fluctuating temperatures solar radiation the snowpack consolidated at the weekend. The weather conditions as the day progresses will give rise to increasing moistening of the snowpack. The conditions in all altitude zones are spring-like. Above approximately 2200 m a lot of snow is lying for the time of year.

Tendency

As a consequence of mild temperatures and rain up to high altitudes the snowpack can not consolidate. The conditions will cause a weakening of the snowpack in all aspects.
