Increase in avalanche danger especially at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions.

The new snow represents the main danger. Avalanches can in some cases be released easily and reach large size in isolated cases. Natural avalanches are possible. In particular on north facing slopes dry avalanches can release the moist old snow as well. Backcountry touring calls for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger and careful route selection.

The Avalanche Warning Service currently has only a small amount of information that has been collected in the field, so that the avalanche danger should be investigated especially thoroughly in the relevant locality.

As a consequence of the rain more medium-sized to large wet and gliding avalanches are to be expected. This applies in particular below approximately 2400 m.

Snowpack As a consequence of heavy snowfalls, the danger of dry avalanches will increase above 2400 m. The fresh snow will be deposited on a favourable old snowpack The old snowpack is thoroughly wet below approximately 2700 m on north facing slopes and up to more than 3000 m in the other aspects. In particular in both southern Valais and Grisons, as well as locally in the other regions, distinct weak layers still exist deep in the old snowpack. In response to the mild temperatures and rain of recent days, these layers became moist for the first time and were consequently weakened. As the temperature falls, the wet avalanche activity will decrease. Gliding avalanches can still occur. Dry avalanches can release the moist snowpack and reach a large size. Observed weather review Tuesday, 09.05.2023 The night was only partly clear with scattered showers. The snowfall level was approximately 2700 m. In the morning it was quite sunny in Valais and the south, otherwise mostly cloudy. In the afternoon precipitation commenced from the west. Fresh snow - Temperature At midday at 2000 m: about +8 °C Wind Light, in the afternoon sometimes moderate, from southerly directions. Weather forecast through Wednesday, 10.05.2023 Precipitation will fall over a wide area; it will be heavy during the night. The snowfall level will drop from approximately 2600 m to 1800 to 2000 m. During the day there will be some bright spells in the west and south, but precipitation will continue to fall in the east. Fresh snow From Tuesday evening until Wednesday afternoon above approximately 2800 m:

• Extreme west of Lower Valais, northern Alpine ridge, Grisons: 20 to 40 cm, but locally up to 50 cm
• Elsewhere: 15 to 25 cm

Temperature At midday at 2000 m: between +2 °C in the north and +5 °C in the south Wind Mostly moderate from the west to northwest Outlook through Friday, 12.05.2023 Thursday It will be mostly cloudy and precipitation will fall over a wide area; in the east the precipitation will sometimes be heavy. Here, a further 20 to 40 cm of snow could fall at elevated altitudes. The snowfall level will be approximately 1600 m during the night before rising towards 2000 m during the day. The wind will be light to moderate from the north. The danger of dry avalanches will continue to increase in particular in the east at high altitudes, but not change significantly elsewhere. The danger of wet snow avalanches will decrease in response to the low temperatures. Friday On Thursday night and during Friday it will be mostly cloudy with showers. Towards the east there will be some bright spells. The snowfall level will be between 1600 and 2000 m. The danger of dry avalanches is expected to decrease. The danger of wet snow avalanches will not change significantly.
