Kernpunkte

Overall low avalanche danger exists throughout the forecast region. Variable snow surfaces will be the greatest crux of the day. The most risky locations are in extreme alpine terrain where pockets of wind slab and slide-for-life conditions exist. Match your ability to the terrain and watch for signs of instability.

Low avalanche danger does not mean that danger does not exist. In the alpine, travelers face a chance of encountering pockets of wind slab on steep south, east, and north aspects. Firm surfaces will also be a likely hazard. If not thoroughly prepared, a fall could result in an uncontrollable slide for life. Pack the climbing essentials: ice axe, crampons, and a helmet.

Avalanche Discussion

By and large, the greatest risk travelers face today is the variable surface conditions. A stout melt-freeze crust exists on the majority of slopes. On those without it, wind effected snow and firm surfaces are likely. On slopes that receive solar heating, surface crusts may begin to thaw and dampen by mid- to late-day. In shady protected areas, soft, undisturbed snow is still possible to experience. These will be the surfaces new snow will fall on in the days to come and some will have better bonding capabilities than others.

The Castle Lake road is still closed. Hopefully, this will change in the next 24 hours.
