Over the last few days, there's been a consistent trickle of observations reporting stiffer wind slabs and long shooting cracks on various aspects from the Washington Pass area. While older wind slabs should be more difficult to trigger with each passing day, a weak faceted snow layer underneath recently formed wind slabs has allowed this problem to stick around. The shifting wind patterns also make it difficult to predict where wind slabs formed in the terrain. So, look for them on various aspects or even mid-slope. Consider the high consequences of triggering a wind slab that breaks wider and deeper than expected if it fails on weak snow above a stout crust from January 31st. Avoid nearby steep slopes if you see long shooting cracks in firmer wind-textured snow or signs of recent avalanches. Slopes beneath large cliffs also tend to harbor slabs, as loose snow spindrifts off and accumulates below. You can always pivot to well-supported and lower-angle slopes or seek wind-sheltered terrain for travel. Cornices are large, and warmer temperatures on Tuesday could make them more prone to failure. You should avoid lingering underneath these behemoths. They are a hazard in their own right, but cornice failure can also trigger consequential avalanches on slopes below.
