Kernpunkte

Dangerous avalanche conditions exist. In steep avalanche terrain, skiers and riders have the potential to trigger sensitive wind slabs that have formed during this current storm cycle as well as larger slabs involving weak snow that is buried within the snowpack. Watch for signs of wind loading and make conservative terrain choices to avoid these avalanche threats.

    Weak, faceted snow underlies the snow that fell last weekend. Hard slab avalanches with depth to three feet can be triggered in steep terrain above 8000' today, particularly on Northwest through east facing terrain. These slabs have become less sensitive however in very steep wind loaded slopes, they could still release upon approach or after partially descending a slope. If triggered these avalanches could be large. Getting out a shovel and evaluating the snowpack is the best way to understand the presence and extent of this weakness.

    Up to a foot of new snow has formed sensitive wind slabs.  These slabs lie on slick, hard snow surfaces and will be very sensitive to the presence of backcountry travelers. Yesterday, two skier triggered slides released in the Twin Slides area. Additional snow and wind will increase the size and sensitivity of these slabs today with slab depths up to two feet possible this afternoon. Once triggered these slabs have the potential to initiate deeper slabs, involving the buried faceted snow.

Avalanche Discussion

Very warm conditions this week has made avalanches involving the persistent weak layer harder to initiate while also making the snow surfaces that were buried yesterday hard and slick, particularly in terrain exposed to direct sunlight. The current storm started with warm temperatures and rain fell at least into the mid elevations, depending on location, making this crust even harder/slicker. The two unintentionally triggered small slides that occurred near Twin slides show how slick this crust is. The current storm is following a cooling trend so new snow conditions will be less upside down than last weekend’s storm. One of these avalanche problems in not more significant than the other. The wind slab problem will certainly be more likely to occur, but is also more easily identified and smaller in size than the persistent slab problem which is not present on as many aspects, has become stubborn to initiate, but is also harder to predict, larger in size, and more likely to have severe consequences.
