Strong to extreme winds have created fresh wind slabs in isolated areas near and above treeline. While deposits are likely to be small and relatively thin during daylight hours, old snow surfaces are comprised largely of slick hard crusts or persistent grain types. This will add to the reactivity of fresh wind deposits. It is also important to consider that fresh wind deposits today are mainly being driven by the available snow for transport. It may be more likely to find fresh wind slabs in areas near treeline and areas with more loose surface snow. Blowing snow, large fresh drifts, hollow upside-down feeling snow, and uneven snow surfaces are all clues that indicate nearby wind deposits. Be suspect of terrain features that encourage drifting, such as the leeward sides of ridgelines, alpine couloirs, mid-slope convex rollovers, and cross-loaded depressions.
