Small and reactive wind slabs may be possible to find in leeward catchment zones near and above treeline today. Be on the lookout for fresh deposits, and be wary of terrain features that elevate the consequences of an avalanche. Avalanche hazard is expected to rise very quickly tonight as a strong winter storm enters the region.

    Strong to extreme winds have created fresh wind slabs in isolated areas near and above treeline. While deposits are likely to be small and relatively thin during daylight hours, old snow surfaces are comprised largely of slick hard crusts or persistent grain types. This will add to the reactivity of fresh wind deposits. It is also important to consider that fresh wind deposits today are mainly being driven by the available snow for transport. It may be more likely to find fresh wind slabs in areas near treeline and areas with more loose surface snow. Blowing snow, large fresh drifts, hollow upside-down feeling snow, and uneven snow surfaces are all clues that indicate nearby wind deposits. Be suspect of terrain features that encourage drifting, such as the leeward sides of ridgelines, alpine couloirs, mid-slope convex rollovers, and cross-loaded depressions.

Avalanche Discussion

Recent field observations have reported intense blowing snow near and above treeline and fresh reactive wind deposits. They have also noted that these deposits are relatively thin and exhibit poor cohesion due to the faceted nature of the loose snow. This may make for tricky conditions to navigate today. While we expect fresh wind slab deposits to be small and isolated in nature, they are also likely to be reactive, propagating quickly and running fast. Remember that even a small avalanche can have large consequences in complex and challenging terrain.

It will also be important to keep in mind that avalanche hazard is expected to spike very quickly this evening as a strong winter storm enters the region. Peak instability is expected overnight during the most intense loading, but you can expect a very different environment tomorrow.
