Forecast updated 7:20 AM to reflect higher than expected snowfall amounts and dangerous avalanche conditions near treeline.

Significant snowfall and wind have created dangerous conditions in wind-exposed areas. Ease into the terrain and give wind drifts time to adjust to the recent snow load. In more sheltered areas, mid-storm interfaces may need some time to settle but also stay out from under steep slopes receiving direct sunshine.

    Strong winds will continue to redistribute 9-12" of storm snow Tuesday night into early Wednesday with a cooling trend. Slabs will be reactive to start the day and could be large. Expect increasing hazard with larger slabs that are firmer and more difficult to steer around above treeline. If you choose to ease onto windward slopes, choose slopes less than 35 degrees, avoiding poorly supported convex rollovers. Throughout this storm cycle, we've seen slabs triggered near ridgelines, but also well down onto mid-slope features. In this case, as winds begin to ease, we think slabs will be more likely in typical start zones, but can't rule out more isolated trigger locations mid-slope. In less wind-affected terrain, the upper snowpack should be right-side-up, meaning the density increases with depth. This creates excellent riding conditions, but if you transition to a firm wind skin, cracking snow surfaces, or unpleasant riding conditions, you may have found yourself on a wind slab. Anticipate these areas by noting the locations of sharp cornices on the slopes above, wind ripples on the snow surface, or rounded pillows. When in doubt, stick to wind-scoured terrain or slopes less than 35 degrees.

    In wind-sheltered terrain in the upper below treeline band, you could find wind-drifted pockets where a small slab could be impactful in high-consequence terrain. You are also likely to encounter storm instabilities generated by high snowfall rates late Tuesday. Hand shear tests can help you identify layers with a propensity to slide before you consider easing into more open or steeper terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

Despite the significantly colder temperatures in the forecast, when the fresh, lower-density snow from Tuesday night receives sunshine, pay attention for moistening snow surfaces, rollerball activity and wet loose avalanches. These could be in the D1.5 range: large enough to ruin your day. Navigate away from steep slopes receiving direct sunshine and onto shaded slopes.

26" of snow has fallen at Timberline since Friday 2/3, bringing the Timberline total snow depth above 100" for the first time this season! By Tuesday, you might expect to find around 1.5-2 ft of snow above the 1/27 crust (the first major widely distrubted crust you will encounter). Depths to this crust will be significantly more on more wind-loaded aspects on the E and N sides of the compass.

Snowfall increased from mid-morning onwards on Tuesday with around 6" of 14% density snow falling at 5500 ft. The storm snow bonded nicely due to mild temperatures, but moderate to strong SW and W winds were redistributing snow and forming instability above 5500 ft. The new snow sits on top of generally firm wind-buffed surfaces in exposed areas, with a potential subtle crust on steep SW aspects due to sunshine  Monday afternoon.  Mild temperatures have given older slabs time to mostly heal on Monday and you can see the profile Joe Dellaport dug on Pea Gravel Ridge in the gallery. Sunday brought strong to extreme winds and heavy snowfall to Mt. Hood. The extreme winds continued Sunday night as snowfall tapered. The photo gallery shows a variety of stubborn, large (to D2.5) avalanche triggered using heavy artillery in the A-zone at Mt. Hood Meadows early Monday.

In most areas, a thicker crust lies around 3 ft down in the snowpack. In shallow snowpack areas such as Tilly Jane it may be only 1-2 ft down. In these shallower snowpack areas, weakening within and around the 1/27 crust may be able to produce a more widely propagating avalanche failing down to that layer with enough snow loading. It is worth keeping on your mind for another day before considering exposing yourself to larger avalanche slopes if you travel on the drier side of the mountain.
