Several weak layers are buried in the upper 1-3' of the snowpack. These layers are capable of producing large avalanches. We went looking for them in this zone last week, and found them in several of our snowpits (read our observation and see photos, video at right/above). These weak layers vary by aspect and elevation, and the overlapping patterns are complex and hard to decipher. Crusts with facets, surface hoar, and near-surface facets—it's a safe bet that one or more of these layers exist on most slopes.
These layers are capable of producing large avalanches, but the likelihood of triggering a slide is gradually decreasing. Unfortunately, the structure for producing these slides (slab + weak layer) remains. Want to avoid triggering a large avalanche today? You can significantly reduce your risk by steering clear of steep, wind-affected terrain.
ADDITIONAL DISCUSSION: Today's storm will bring 3-6" of snow to this zone by the end of the day. Moderate to strong gusty winds will be pushing this snow around as it falls, building isolated wind slabs in exposed terrain. These aren't likely to be large, but they may be sensitive thanks to the weak snow surface that will be buried by this storm. Look for drifts, dunes, pillows, and blowing snow as evidence of the presence of these. Cracks shooting out in front of your skis/machine are a sure sign you've found one.
