Kernpunkte

A strong Atmospheric River storm will continue with gale force winds, rain, and high elevation snow throughout our region today.  Widespread avalanche activity is expected to occur with heavy loading of the snowpack from rain and high intensity snowfall.  Travel in, near, or below avalanche terrain is not recommended.

    Gale force southwest winds will be transporting snow and forming large wind slabs on NW-N-NE-E-SE aspects in near and above treeline areas.  Due to the elevated wind speeds, wind slabs may form on other aspects and in more protected below treeline areas.  Most wind slabs will develop above the snow/rain level.  Large cornices along ridgelines and wind slabs that get rained on will weaken quickly and could fail.  Wind slab avalanches could be both wet and dry depending on snow levels and elevations.

    Travel in or below avalanche terrain is not recommended today.

    Heavy rain on recent storm snow will create wet slab avalanches potentially on all aspects and elevations.  Avalanches could fail on recent melt freeze crusts or old snow/new snow interfaces from recent storm events.  High uncertainty exists about rapid loading of our deep snowpack with rain and heavy wet snow.  There is the possibility that wet slab avalanches could fail much deeper in our snowpack producing very large and destructive avalanches.

    Travel in, near, or below avalanche terrain is not recommended.

    Heavy rain on snow will create widespread wet loose avalanches on all aspects and elevations.  Wet loose avalanches today could look like anything from roller balls and pinwheels to D2 wet loose avalanches running long distances through steep gully features.  As snow/rain levels move around, this wet loose avalanche problem could also change locations and elevations. 

    Travel in, near, or below avalanche terrain is not recommended. 

Avalanche Discussion

Our region has had an active winter with a deep snowpack, well below average temperatures, and mostly low density snowfall.   We are now transitioning from a cold winter snowpack to one that is now being rapidly loaded by rain and heavy snowfall.  We have seen this winter avalanche problems developing or problems lasting longer than normal due to the colder weather conditions.  A high level of uncertainty exists on how the snowpack will react to this large loading event currently underway.  Wet slab avalanches are notoriously hard to predict and forecast.  What we do know-large loading events can bring unpredictable outcomes.  This is a large loading event with additional storms lined up!
