Avalanche activity has already impacted highways inthe Hoback and Snake River Canyons. roadways. Be aware of the potential for roof slides in areas that receive significant rainfall.
The potential for destructive deep slab avalanches to release at the upper elevations will be increasing. Large destructive deep slab avalanches could release naturally and are likely to be easily triggered by humans. Avoid the runout zones of known avalanche paths.
Large to very large slab avalanches with depths to three feet are likely to release naturally. These dangerous slides may run long distances and are likely to entrain wet snow at the lower elevations. Persistent Deep Slab
( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Heavy snow is expected overnight and to continue at least into midday. Lighter snowfall is anticipated during the afternoon and evening hours. There could be a mix of rain and snow and or periods of rain at the lowest elevations. Additional accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are expected overnight in the mountains with locally higher amounts. Valleys should get another 4 to 6 inches with locally higher amounts and areas of rain. More snow will accumulate during the day.Temperatures will remain in the 20s at the higher elevations and will be in the upper 20s to mid-30s at the lower elevations. Winds will be from the south to southwest at 25 to 30 with gusts to 45 miles per hour. These conditions will combine to create dangerous avalanche conditions at all elevations. The general avalanche hazard is forecast to increase to HIGH. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended when the avalanche hazard is high. Natural avalanche activity is likely and human triggered avalanches are very likely. Wet slides are likely on steep slopes and roof slides are likely at the lower elevations. Large slab avalanches are likely at the mid and upper elevations. This avalanche activity could affect roadways. Due to these conditions an AVALANCHE WARNING will be issued by the Bridger-Teton National Forest Avalanche Center for areas of southeast Idaho and northwestern Wyoming. This warning will be effect for the period from 9 PM tonight until 9 PM tomorrow night.
