You can trigger a slab large enough to injure or kill you on Thursday. Conditions may border on dangerous with a storm bringing another 6" of snow and moderate to strong winds creating deeper wind-loaded pockets. Strong to extreme winds heavily wind affected the 13" of snow that sits generally right side up and well-bonded to the 12/27 refreezing crust. Mt. Hood Meadows Pro Patrol was able to pull out an isolated large avalanche 2 ft deep with explosives on Wednesday. However, we expect most avalanche activity to occur as denser slabs build above the recent dry snow layers. As you head into more wind-affected terrain, check for firm, punchy layering or hollow-sounding snow. Cracking under your mode of travel will also help you identify a wind slab. The farther the crack propagates, the more reactive the slab will be. Use visual cues such as identifying blowing snow deposition zones and pillow-like drifts to locate the problem. When in doubt, stick windward aspects or slopes less than 35 degrees.
Cornices have grown large and more reactive in recent days. Give them a wider birth near ridgelines and also steer clear of them on ascent routes. The softer, sharper portion will also cue you in to wind deposits on the slopes below.
