At the upper elevations on east through north to west aspects loose snow lies upon a hard rain crust that formed in October. The loose snow that lies upon those slick crust is shallow and comprised of older, temperature gradient, snow and recent new snow with areas of fresh surface hoar growth. Avalanches are unlikely except in isolated pockets in very steep terrain. Small slides in steep terrain can cause serious injury, especially during early season conditions when rocks and other obstacles increase the potential for traumatic injury. Avalanche hazards are not a concern in terrain where the recent new snow has accumulated on bare ground.
Avalanche Discussion
Cloud cover will increase during the day on Sunday ahead of a Pacific low pressure system slated to bring snowfall to the region starting Sunday night. Overnight lows in the mountains will be near 20 before rising into the mid-30s during the day. Southwesterly ridgetop winds will range from 10 to 20 miles per hour.At the upper elevations, the general avalanche hazard is expected to be LOW on Sunday. Some potential may remain for skiers and riders to trigger a shallow surface slab in steep, avalanche-prone starting zones where wind drifted snow lies upon a weak layer of faceted snow underlain by a slick crust. Remember, early season conditions exist, and even small slides can cause serious injury by carrying backcountry travelers into exposed rocks and other obstacles. Avalanche hazards are not a concern in terrain where the recent new snow fell onto bare ground.
