Avalanche Activity

Weakly bonded old snow represents the main danger.

Avalanches can be released in the weakly bonded old snow by a single winter sport participant. This applies in particular on west, north and east facing slopes above approximately 1800 m. In some cases avalanches are medium-sized. Whumpfing sounds and the formation of shooting cracks when stepping on the snowpack can indicate the danger. In the regions neighbouring those that are subject to danger level 3 (considerable) the avalanche danger is higher.

Snowpack Structure

The new snow and wind slabs of the last few days are lying on top of a weakly bonded old snowpack on west to north to east facing aspects above approximately 1800 m. Distinct weak layers exist in the old snowpack.

Tendency

The weather conditions will facilitate a very slow stabilisation of the snowpack.
