Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Accumulations of unstable windslab will be present primarily on North through East to South-East aspects above 850 metres. Increased instability during the morning, particularly on Northerly aspects as snow is redistributed. Steep terrain such as gully tops, coire rims and scarp slopes where snow gains depth will be most affected. Cornices will be prone to collapse. Elsewhere, there will be a slow consolidation and stability will be generally good. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Strong Westerly winds will back South-West overnight and increase to gale force. Later in the morning winds easing and veering Westerly for the remainder of the period. The freezing level will rise sharply above the summits during the morning then fall to around 600 metres by the end of the day. A period of heavy snow will arrive in the early hours then frequent blustery snow and hail showers during the afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: Very strong to gale force Westerly winds. Showers throughout the forecast period fell as snow to around 300 metres. The freezing level was around 400 metres. Cloudy with sunny spells. ObservedSnowStability: Fresh accumulations of unstable windslab have developed, primarily on North-East to South-East wind sheltered aspects above 850 metres. Below this altitude and above 500 meters the new snow has mostly fallen on bare ground or isolated patches of old snow and stability is generally good. Elsewhere, wind scoured slopes are firm and icy. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
