Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Unstable windslab will develop on wind sheltered North to East aspects above 1000 metres. Elsewhere the old snowpack will continue to consolidate; however on West through North to North-East aspects above 850 metres, localised instabilities will persist. Areas most affected will be steep locations such as gullies, crag aprons and corrie back walls. Cornices will be unstable with potential to collapse triggering slopes below. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Rain at all levels during the first part of the night. Light snowfall is expected from the middle of the night onwards above 1000 metres. West-South-Westerly winds will be gale force for the duration of the forecast period. Freezing level above the summits overnight before falling to 1000 metres from dawn onwards. Observed Weather Influences: A mild day with spells of heavy drizzle at all levels on fresh South-Easterly winds. It was zero degrees at summit levels for the duration of the day. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack is thawing and consolidating at all altitudes; however snowpack instabilities were evident on steep West through North to North-East aspects mainly above 900 metres. Large unstable cornices overhang many of these aspects. Some instabilities are present below this altitude on steep and convex banks and burn lines. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
