Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs represent the main danger.

The wind slabs can be released even by a single winter sport participant in all aspects at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions. This applies in particular at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack, when entering gullies and bowls for example. Backcountry touring calls for defensive route selection. As a consequence of falling temperatures, the natural activity of avalanches will appreciably decrease.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 100 to 150 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen since Saturday. The moderate wind has transported the new snow significantly. The new snow has settled to a large extent at low and intermediate altitudes. Intermediate and high altitudes: Individual weak layers exist in the old snowpack especially on shady slopes. The surface of the snowpack will soften during the day. This applies in particular on sunny slopes, as well as at low and intermediate altitudes.
