Avalanche Activity

New snow and wind slabs: In these regions the avalanche danger is considerable (level 3).

Above approximately 1200 m snow will fall until midday. The new snow is lying on top of a quite favourable old snowpack. As a consequence of new snow and a strong wind from easterly directions, avalanche prone wind slabs formed since Saturday in particular at intermediate and high altitudes. In all aspects medium-sized avalanches are to be expected. Avalanches can in many places be released, even by a single winter sport participant. Ski touring and other off-piste activities, including snowshoe hiking, call for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger and careful route selection.

Snowpack Structure

The old snowpack is well consolidated and its surface consists of loosely bonded snow lying on a melt-freeze crust that is strong in many cases. Above approximately 1200 m snow will fall until midday over a wide area. The new snow is bonding only slowly with the old snowpack. The easterly wind will transport the new snow. Intermediate and high altitudes: Individual weak layers exist in the old snowpack especially on shady slopes.

Tendency

The avalanche danger will not decrease for the time being.
